- <p> FIRED. Tom Landry, 64, the only coach of the Dallas Cowboys
- since the team was founded 29 years ago. A brilliant,
- unemotional football strategist noted for never removing his
- hat while a game was in progress, Landry guided the Cowboys to
- five Super Bowl appearances, including victories in 1972 and
- 1978. As Landry's replacement, the Cowboys' new owner, Arkansas
- oilman Jerral Jones, selected his college teammate, University
- of Miami coach Jimmy Johnson. Said Landry: "You've taken my team
- away from me."
